Follow the yatra from understanding the vow to returning home. Use this sequence as a guide alongside your Guruswamy’s instruction.

Sabarimala routes: Periya Pathai, Pamba and Sathram

Choose a route by its starting point, pilgrimage tradition and current permission. Regional names such as Pedda Padam or Chinna Pathai need the context of the group using them.

Erumeli traditional route: Periya Pathai / Pedda Padam

The longer pilgrimage through Erumeli and Karimala is remembered as a sacred forest journey. The place sequence below is a devotional orientation, not a live navigation map.

Erumeli, Pettathullal and Vavar Swami

Erumeli is a sacred gateway in the traditional pilgrimage. Its temple and Vavar traditions connect devotion, communal memory and hospitality.

Direct journey to Pamba via Nilakkal

Plan the road approach separately from the walking pilgrimage. Reaching Pamba does not mean that vehicles can take you to Sannidhanam.

Sathram and Pullumedu approach: check permission first

The forest-side approach associated with Sathram and Pullumedu requires current official access guidance. This page is not confirmation that the route is open.

Pamba: sacred river and preparation for the ascent

Pamba, also written Pampa, is closely connected with the Ayyappa pilgrimage. It is both a sacred place in the narrative and a practical preparation point before the climb.

Sabarimala packing list and pilgrim conduct

Pack lightly and keep ritual offerings distinct from personal travel supplies. Confirm your group’s Irumudi list separately.

Returning home and completing the vow: Mala removal

The pilgrimage continues through the return journey and the completion of the observance. Mala removal is also described regionally as Mala Viramana or Mala Visarjanam.

Temple opening dates

Check the official temple calendar before committing to travel. The 2026–27 Mandala–Makaravilakku dates have not been verified for this edition.

Book through the official virtual queue

Use the official Sabarimala portal for darshan reservations. Swamy Saranam provides guidance and never collects pilgrim identity documents, booking fees or payments.

Darshan and pooja timings

Darshan and pooja timings must be checked against the notice for your visit. This guide does not treat a general daily schedule as a confirmed seasonal timetable.

Sabarimala: the sacred abode of Lord Ayyappa

Sabarimala is a hill shrine in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, within the Periyar Tiger Reserve landscape. Sannidhanam refers to Swamy’s sacred presence and temple precinct.

Pathinettampadi: the eighteen sacred steps and their meanings

Pathinettampadi—also searched as Padunettambadi or Pathinettam Padi—is the sacred flight of eighteen steps. Symbolic explanations vary; the table below presents one interpretation described by Kerala Tourism.

Sabarimala Darshanam: from arrival to departure

Understand the devotional sequence before arrival, then follow the actual queue movement and temple instructions on the day.

Neyyabhishekam and the Neythenga offering

Neyyabhishekam is the offering of ghee in abhishekam to Lord Ayyappa. Devotees traditionally bring ghee in a prepared coconut within the Irumudi.

Malikappurathamma, Vavar and the sacred precinct

The Sabarimala pilgrimage includes associated shrines and traditions beyond the main Darshanam. Learn their significance while respecting current access arrangements.

Sabarimala prasadam: Aravana, Appam and collection

Prasadam is received as a blessing following worship. Plan collection through the official arrangements at Sannidhanam.

Facilities at Nilakkal, Pamba and Sannidhanam

Know what to look for at each stage: transport, drinking water, toilets, food, rest and medical assistance. Availability and locations must be checked for the current season.
