Ayyappa in sacred tradition
The sacred narrative describes Ayyappa as Hariharaputra, the son of Shiva and Vishnu in the form of Mohini. His earthly life as Manikanta connects him with the royal household of Pandalam. These are devotional narratives through which devotees understand his divine mission.
The Lord at Sabarimala
At Sabarimala, Swamy is worshipped in a meditative form. The journey to his hill shrine asks the devotee to prepare inwardly as well as physically: how one speaks, treats others and keeps the vow matters alongside reaching the temple.
Begin with the meaning of refuge
“Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa” expresses seeking refuge in Ayyappa. A pilgrim can begin by learning the invocation, understanding the Vratham and finding a Guruswamy who can explain the tradition followed by the group.
