A living tradition
The pilgrimage has been sustained by devotees, local communities, ritual specialists and temple institutions. Oral accounts preserve meanings that cannot always be assigned a precise historical date. Avoid treating a single retelling as the only account.
The modern shrine
Kerala Tourism records the rebuilding of the shrine following the 1950 fire and the later covering of the eighteen steps in Panchaloha in 1985. These are historical milestones distinct from the sacred accounts of the temple’s founding.
Pandalam and the pilgrimage
The royal household’s connection continues in ritual traditions, including the procession of sacred ornaments. Understanding these living relationships is more useful than assigning unsupported dates to every episode of the legend.
