Find your guide early

Choose a Guruswamy who explains the observance, welcomes questions and can guide the group through preparation and travel. Learn the group’s routine before Mala Dharanam.

Learn before departure

Practise the Saranaghosham, understand the purpose of the Irumudi and ask which route your group intends to follow. Keep the official booking confirmation and identity document required for your visit ready.

Rituals associated with first-time pilgrims

Erumeli, Pettathullal and Saramkuthi occur in accounts of first-pilgrimage customs. Follow the route and observances explained by your Guruswamy, together with current temple, forest and police directions. Do not assume every ritual can be performed at every time of year.

Keep the group together

Agree on meeting points and a return plan. Tell your guide when tired or unwell, and allow time for rest. Asking for help is part of travelling responsibly.
