The eighteen-pilgrimage tradition

Kerala Tourism describes a Guruswamy as one who has completed eighteen Sabarimala pilgrimages. A Kerala government account refers to eighteen years of visiting. These descriptions support the tradition but should not be collapsed into an automatic calculation of multiple trips in a single year.

What a guide does

A Guruswamy helps devotees understand the vow, supports Mala Dharanam and Irumudi preparation, and explains the group’s customary sequence of worship. Patient instruction and attention to fellow pilgrims matter alongside experience.

A role of service

The title should be understood together with discipline, knowledge and humility. Completion of a number alone does not establish spiritual perfection or justify imposing invented rules on others. Ask which lineage or temple tradition your group follows.
